A true experience on the waters: one day in kayak on the whirling waters of Borcea River and another day in canoe on the smooth waters of Alionte Branch. You will see Danube River in 2 different instances: the mighty, furious river and the water that creates the magnificent ecosystem with the patience of a god waiting for his creation to take place. The most fascinating story that follows you around this trip is to watch the water leave a mark on this place and the ephemeral life of the ecosystem. You are at any time a witness of a specific moment in time, due to water movement, growth and dynamics one moment can not be reproduces. You will see the mark on the trees 2 -3 meters above the ground level where the water was just a few weeks or months ago, you will see plants and trees submerged under the water and fish swimming in the land that does not belong to them. The contrast between the noisy, activity driven, turbulent waters of the navigable branch of Borcea versus the still and quiet like a time stop scenery on the Alionte Branch will surprise you. I admit I had a little fear for going on such big water with an un-motorized floating device, but there was no issues even if we had some waves due to the rain and wind in that day. All the time there is a guide with you that can help if there are any problems. Day 1: we left near Stelnica on the Borcea Branch with kayaks for 12 km down the river. From there on the foot to Bentu Mare Lake where we took the kayak on the lake. Next day we cross the river with the ferry and went to visit the Alionte Branch with canoe. If you have never been to Danube Delta this place is a very good representation of it. I was surprised to find only 2 hours away from Bucharest such peaceful and wild natural environment. This trip in organised by Danube Escapes with Nichita and his team (https://danubeescapes.com/). I recommend letting him show you the Danube like you have never seen before, it is a total submerge in nature. You can not imagine what the impact will be after only 2 days spend on his agenda. He understands life in the big cities and he has the cure: going to places where for hours you don't hear other humans or machines or any kind of noise you are used to, keeping permanent connection with the water and sleeping in the tent in camping or on the boat on the river, and there you are - a new born human. His team (Danube Escapes) provide all the necessary equipment and safety measures. I don't recommend taking this trip on your own unless you are a professional.
We left Bucharest around 6 am to arrive in time to catch the 10 am start of the tour.
You are on an island between Borcea and Dunearea Veche Brances. It is called Balta because this was a wetland covered with marshes, woods, lakes and ponds. But the communist decided to make agriculture due to great soil here. The island has an area of 831.3 km², with a length of 94 km from Calarasi to Harsova - so it is pretty big. You can reach the island from the bridge from A2 highway and with the ferry. The average height is 10 to 17 meters.
